So we have been doing this snap poll. Asking people, even those who work in the media: how many stations does Nigeria have?

We usually hear just about seven: AIT, NTA, Channels TV, Galaxy, TVC, Ebony Life TV, Africa Magic.

First and foremost we mean stations owned by Nigerians, for Nigerians, but we’ll forgive people slipping Africa Magic in. It’s also the power of branding that EbonyLife TV which is a cable channel, is the only Nigerian channel to be mentioned when we have many.

We always remind people: What about Hip TV and Soundcity? And then they say ‘Oh yes, we knew those. We forgot.” Every time.

So we thought it would be fun to let you know how many TV channels actually exist in Nigeria – across DTT (Digital Terrestrial TV) and DTH (Direct to Home), which is what we all call Cable.

And the answer is: well over 50.

We’ll just give you a hint – across terrestrial TV and then 3 of the major cable TV networks below.

Terrestrial Lagos:

ONTV, Galaxy, AIT, TVC, MITV, Silverbird TV, NTA 2 Channel 5, Superscreen, LTV Channel 8, Channels TV, NTA 10.

Terrestrial everywhere else:

DBS, RSTV, AKBC, ITV, BCA, ABS, OSBC, BRTV, CTV, BATV.

(And all of these are minus the same brand names spread across the country – because Galaxy Akure is a different enterprise from Galaxy Lagos for instance.)

DSTV:

EbonyLife TV, Hip TV, Soundcity, Spice TV, TVC News and TVC Entertainment (both are different), Arise TV (though Uncle Nduka will be very upset, because it’s an “international channel”), TRACE Naija (just because they put Naija in the name), Kingdom Africa (a Nigerian gospel music channel), Dove TV, Emmanuel TV.

We would add Vox Africa, because there is some Nigeria in there. But it’s really a UK-based channel for Diaspora Nigerians that came home at some point.

Startimes:

WAP TV, R2TV, Nigezie, Orisun, One Music, iROKO Play, iROKO World, Star Music, Star Yoruba.

GoTV:

Rave TV, Cool TV (we are not sure if it’s permanently suspended because it’s been gone for about three months now), Wazobia TV, Televista, Trybes TV.

And we are already tired of listing.

But you get the picture, yes?

You think you really know Nigeria – until you realize you don’t.

So many stories we have not even begun to tell.
