Twitter is giving its Tweet and Follow buttons a makeover, which, according to a company staffer, will go live in about a month, at the end of October.

The new buttons will feature a high-contrast flat look, which, taking into account that almost all "cool" sites use in their design, will help the buttons fit right in where they might be deployed.

This new redesign comes to supplant Twitter's former buttons we all came to know and love, premiered four years ago in 2011.

Besides the stylistic update, the Tweet button will also change how it works, with Twitter engineers announcing they will drop the share counter shown next to each button, counter that shows how many times the link attached to that button has been shared.

The API endpoints responsible for showing this counter will also shut down when the overhauled buttons go live, and developers wanting to know how many times a link has been shared on the network are encouraged to use the Twitter REST API's search endpoints instead.

The counter will still continue to work on the Follow button.

Other recent design-related changes that have affected Twitter include the removal of custom profile background images, the addition of birthday dates on the public profile page, and the removal of the 140-character limit for private DMs (Direct Messages).
