China and India have agreed to maintain peace along the Himalayan border while they work on resolving boundary disputes.

Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval are meeting in New Delhi this week for talks on a border dispute that has strained relations between the neighbors for decades.

China and India have agreed to maintain peace along the Himalayan border while they work on resolving boundary disputes.

It is the first such negotiations since India?s Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office last year.

Any progress will also throw a positive light on his expected visit to Beijing in May.

It has been difficult to find a solution. The disagreement over the 3,500km border led to a brief war in 1962.

Two armies faced off in the Ladakh sector last September when Chinese President Xi Jinping was visiting India, local media reported.

Last month, Beijing protested Modi?s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, also called South Tibet by China. Beijing said these areas of China?s Tibet - Monyul, Loyul and Lower Tsayul - are illegally occupied by India.
