Huawei is about to suffer the first major blow after being blacklisted by the United States government back in May, as the company’s upcoming flagship, the Mate 30 series, can’t use Android and Google apps and services.

The Chinese tech giant confirmed for Reuters that the launch of the device would still happen even without Google’s software.

People familiar with the matter told the same source that the unveiling could take place on September 18 in Munich, but specifics on when the Mate 30 could hit the shelves aren’t available for now.

While Google says that Huawei can’t use Android or its apps, the Chinese tech firm says it’s ready to switch the full focus to its very own Android replacement.

“Huawei will continue to use the Android OS and ecosystem if the U.S. government allows us to do so,” Huawei spokesman Joe Kelly was quoted as saying by Reuters. “Otherwise, we will continue to develop our own operating system and ecosystem.”

In-house operating system
Huawei was banned by the United States President Donald Trump from working with American companies, and this involves a restriction on using their products and services. After being placed on the Entity List, Huawei is no longer allowed to use licensed Android for its new devices, so its only alternative would be an open-source version of Android.

However, even if the company goes for this second option, Google apps still can’t be used because of the ban.

At this point, it’s not yet known if Huawei’s very own operating system is ready for launch, as people close to the matter recently said the company encountered problems when trying to add support for Android apps. But even if this OS ends up being installed on the Mate 30, there are concerns that sales can be massively impacted outside China, especially in Europe, which is currently a key market for Huawei.
