If you're into old-school gaming, you should know that SEGA announced at Sega Fes 2018 that it is planning to launch a miniature edition of its SEGA Mega Drive gaming console dubbed Mega Drive Mini.

Slated for release later in the year, the SEGA Mega Drive Mini will probably be SEGA's smallest gaming console ever created, following the design of the Genesis, launched almost 30 years ago on October 29, 1988. Best of all, the new gaming console is coming with SEGA's most iconic Mega Drive titles too.

Polygon reports that the SEGA Mega Drive Mini is pre-loaded with several classic games for true fans of the SEGA video games. SEGA also announced that it is planning on making various of its titles for which it's famous for to the Nintendo Switch gaming console, but it's coming only to Japan at first.

Available in the US and the rest of the world later this year
While there aren’t any hardware specifications announced by SEGA at the moment of writing, AtGames reveals the fact that SEGA’s COO recently said the company is planning to get back into the hardware business “with a proper reissue of the Genesis/Mega Drive Mini.” The console is expected to offer a rewind feature similar to the one in the Flashback console.

Most probably, SEGA would want to take on Nintendo’s NES and Super NES Classic gaming console, which had a huge succesa among hardcore retro console gamers. Unfortunately, the SEGA Mega Drive Mini won’t come with Sonic 3 title as many would have expected due to licensing issues, revealed AtGames.

Anyway, 2018 looks to be a very promising year for fans of retro gaming. We expect SEGA to announce all the features and hardware specifications of its forthcoming Mega Drive Mini in the coming weeks. As you can see from the image below, the console won’t have a full-sized cartridge slot, at least not for the Japanese version.
