Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an "all-out effort" to rescue and aid those injured in Tuesday's powerful earthquake in a remote mountainous region of Sichuan province.

Officials say seven people were killed and 88 hurt. They expect the death toll to climb to at least 100. The officials say at least five of those killed were tourists.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.5, while China's earthquake center says it was a 7.0

The quake was centered in Ngawa prefecture, sparsely populated mostly by Tibetans — many of whom are nomadic herders — near a well-known national park.

The quake damaged more than 100,000 houses and knocked out power across the region.

Earthquakes are fairly common in China, especially the mountainous southwestern province.

Tuesday's quake was close to the 2008 8.0-magnitude quake that devastated the region, leaving 87,000 people dead or missing.
