Manchester United grab vital away goal

Manchester United's trip to Russia to face FC Rostov was never going to be easy, and they came away with a 1-1 draw, giving them the upper hand ahead of the second leg. The Red Devils will fancy their chances in front of their home crowd, with the added bonus of going into the match with a crucial away goal.

In the build up to the match, United manager Jose Mourinho voiced concerns about the pitch in Russia, worried that players may pick up injuries on the difficult surface. Despite this, he picked a strong starting eleven, including Ibrahimovic, Pogba, Mkhitaryan and Smalling, as he showed his determination to pick up a good result.

Mourinho altered his usual tactics slightly, playing with three centre backs and wing backs, in a bid to cancel out the Rostov threat and look to attack where possible.

United took the lead in a fairly uneventful first half after thirty five minutes. Some great play from Ibrahimovic saw him square the ball across the face of goal for Mkhitaryan to finish off.

Eight minutes into the second half however, Rostov were level. Aleksandr Burkharov controlled and finished neatly past Sergio Romero to send the home fans into celebration.

That is how the game finished, and both teams will be relatively happy with the result. FC Rostov will be happy to have held United to a draw, whilst the Manchester club will be happy to have not slipped up in the difficult conditions, and come away with no injury problems.

The sides will meet again at Old Trafford next Thursday, as they compete for a place in the Europa League quarter finals. Next up for Manchester United is an FA Cup tie against Chelsea.
