The World Health Organization on Monday declared Nigeria officially Ebola-free, after 42 days ? or two incubation periods ? without any new confirmed cases of the deadly virus.

Nigeria was free of Ebola until July 20 when an infected diplomat, Patrick Sawyer arrived.

He became terribly ill on his flight and was rushed to the First Consultant Hospital Obalende, Lagos, where he died on July 24.

Nigeria won praise for its swift response after an infected Liberian diplomat Patrick Sawyer brought the disease there in July.

?The virus is gone for now. The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated. This is a spectacular success story that shows to the world that Ebola can be contained,? WHO country representative Rui Gama Vaz said in Abuja.

After six weeks with no new cases, the World Health Organisation today decleared Nigeria Ebola-free

The WHO also declared Senegal Ebola-free on Friday.

The outbreak has killed more than 4,500 people in West Africa, mostly in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.

An estimated 70 per cent of those infected have died in those countries.
