Governor Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa said in Gombe Sunday that Nigerians owed a lot to President Muhammadu Buhari for his swift action in addressing the security challenges posed by insurgents.
Bindow, who was in Gombe to felicitate with the people of the state on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the state, noted that the threat to lives and property had been substantially reduced.
“Our President deserves commendation for his military exploits in fighting the insurgents.
“Now, we can sleep with both eyes closed and move around freely”, he said, while fielding questions from newsmen.
The Governor also commended Gov. Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe for taking the state to greater height within a short time of his stewardship.
“No doubt Dankwambo has achieved a lot; Gombe State has been transformed to a modern city within 20 years of its creation, “he said.
The governor said he joined the people of Gombe in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the creation of their state because they and people of Adamawa were one and inseparable.
“Although we now differ in our political persuasion, Gombe state being PDP and Adamawa APC, I can confidently say we are dialectically, economically and socially related ,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian army says it sponsored the education of 3,856, children of soldiers killed by boko haram terrorist in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions for the 2015/2016 academic year alone.
This is coming just as the army has expressed worry over the increasing number of children left behind by deceased personnel who died in action while fighting the counterinsurgency war in the north east.
Chief Of Army Staff(COAS), Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai, who made this known at the COAS combined second and third quarter conference held at Makurdi, Benue state, however assured that the army would continue to sustain sponsorship of the education of children of deceased NA personnel in Nigerian Army schools and other local institutions, despite the sharp increase in the number of beneficiaries.
It attributed the increase of beneficiaries of its educational scheme to the rise in the number of casualties recorded in the various army operations, especially “Operation LAFIYA DOLE”, in the north east.
Buratai, while assuring that the welfare of troops and their families would continue to be his priority in managing the affairs of the army, said “The NA has continued to sustain sponsorship of the education of children of deceased NA personnel in Nigerian Army schools and other local institutions, despite the sharp increase in the number of beneficiaries.
He said “This increase though is a result of the rise in the number of causalities in the various operations engaged by the Nigerian Army particularly, Operation LAFIYA DOLE.
According to him, “For the 2015/2016 Academic year, a total of 3,856 children of deceased personnel were sponsored by the Nigerian Army in Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions.
“The scholarship scheme offers the opportunity for children of deceased personnel to acquire the requisite educational qualification as well as add value to the nation.
