Google Contacts is one of the handiest applications for organizing and managing contacts, as well as for syncing them to the web version and making sure that you don't lose phone numbers when switching to a new handset or making major changes to it. However, the Android application has always seemed to have fewer features compared to the web version.

Google has started rolling out an update that will change just that and provide Android users with more features to manage their contacts, according to Android Police. Previously, the Android app was quite simplistic, with the UI having a list of contacts and an Add button. There were some options when adding contacts, but there were just the usual sections for adding information, nothing quite out of the ordinary.

The new update to version 1.5 brings many notable improvements, among which the exclusion of Favorites and All tabs that were provided in the previous versions. These two tabs have been replaced by a hamburger menu with many more options.

Now you can view contacts and filter them by labels and accounts. Users will now be able to create and manage labels from the app so that they can manage contacts in a more intuitive way.

Google Contacts on Android now detects duplicate contacts
Aside from this, Google has introduced an option that allows you to remove duplicates from the list of contacts so that you could better organize them. The feature wasn't available on the Android version in the past, but it is present in the web version of Google Contacts. The app offers users the option to merge or delete duplicate contacts.

The app also detects duplicates across multiple synched accounts on the device. In addition, Google has moved options from the overflow menu to the Settings page, but it hasn't provided anything new in this section. The update has already started rolling out to Android devices and will arrive to users soon.

Google is preparing to make Allo available, and the new options in Contacts will surely be useful to users once the upcoming messaging app hits the Play Store.
