Premier League West Bromwich Albion have been knocked out of the EFL Cup by Northampton Town. Tony Pulis' men were held to a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes of action at the Sixfields Stadium.

Goals from Zander Diamond and Alex Revell cancelled out strikes from James McClean and Gareth McAuley before the hosts won 4-3 on penalties to progress into the next round of the tournament.

Similarly, League One side Gillingham came from behind to shock Premier League side Watford in extra time at Vicarage Road. Striker Bradley Dack proved to be the match winner for the Gills, scoring at the back post via the crossbar on the 100-minute mark.

Elsewhere on Tuesday (23 August), Liverpool bounced back from their weekend loss to Burnley with a morale-boosting 5-0 win against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium. Belgian forward Divock Origi gave the Reds the lead on 15 minutes and Brazilian teammate Roberto Firmino doubled their advantage seven minutes later.

Burton's Tom Naylor scored an own goal around the hour mark, before Liverpool's injury-plagued centre-forward Daniel Sturridge scored a brace late on, having recently returned to first-team action for the Merseysiders.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte continued his unblemished start at Chelsea with a 3-2 victory against Bristol Rovers in the second round of the EFL Cup at Stamford Bridge. The Italian disciplinarian had two goals from summer signing Michy Batshuayi and Victor Moses to thank for their progression to the next stage of the competition.

Bristol, for their part, scored through Peter Hartley and a 48th-minute penalty from Ellis Harrison - but they were unable to find an equalising goal in the second half.
