Facebook has recently announced a new feature, one that helps users find nearby events inside the Facebook application. The new Featured Events is available on iOS and comes with a wide range of custom-curated events that users can check out and attend.
Facebook already has an Events section that allows users to find various events and connect with friends who intend to participate in them. About 550 million people use Facebook Events each month, but Facebook thought that it would be a good idea to provide them with a list of custom-curated events that they could later attend.

The feature has already started rolling out to iOS users in 10 US cities, and it comes with recommendations for the top events in each city. The suggestions revolve around art, music, sports, festivals, family events and more. The new section will be incorporated at the top of the Events screen in the Facebook application, and TechCrunch reports that events are hand-picked by Facebook's staff.

The new feature will provide users with push notifications
The existing Events section allowed users to see which friends RSVP'd to events and past events that users had attended. The new section comes with some added functionality, in the sense that it will provide users with early push notifications so that users can contact friends and attend events together.

Facebook's intention is to also highlight broad events that could fit thousands of people, to the detriment of small or private ones that only a few guests could attend.

Aside from the new feature, Facebook also has some categories for its events, like “Music” or “Food,” so that users could find events that they're interested in faster. It also comes with time frames, like events for “this weekend.”

The new feature will be available in 10 US cities, including Boston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, San Francisco, Washington and more. It might be expanded to additional towns and regions in the future.

Facebook has been making some big changes to its Android app as well, as the company has just recently incorporated SMS inside the application.
