Google has announced that, starting May, its search results ranking algorithm will provide an extra boost of visibility to mobile-friendly websites.

The company was already placing mobile-friendly sites at the top of its search results, something it started to do ever since April 2015. This new update only tweaks the ranking algorithm, so mobile-friendly sites get even more visibility than before.

Sites that didn't get a chance to update to more modern codebases that cater to mobile users as well won't be relegated to the depths of the Internet. Google says that good content is still good content, and based on the user's search queries, non-mobile-friendly websites will still have a chance to rank well if they provide relevant content.

The optimum scenario will be if webmasters update to so-called "responsive Web design" techniques that automatically shuffle a page's elements around so it will fit in any viewing resolution.

If four or five years ago responsive design was a novel concept, these days there are countless tools to help webmasters implement it, and almost all website themes are built with support for responsive, mobile-friendly sites out of the box.

Google is one of the leading companies that have spearheaded this effort, and there are several guidelines that webmasters can consult to learn about how to create mobile-friendly websites, such as Web Fundamentals, Principles of Site Design, and the Webmaster Mobile Guide. Webmasters can also test their website's mobile friendliness with Google's Mobile-Friendly Test.
