Authorities in Malaysia said 13 bodies washed ashore on a beach in the southern state of Johor Tuesday.

District police chief Rhamat Othman said the victims, comprised of four men and nine women, were among 35 illegal immigrants from Indonesia whose boat capsized during rough weather.

A search-and-rescue mission is under way.

Many Indonesians risk their lives each year to make a dangerous sea journey to look for work in Malaysia.
