Frozen Man Recovers After Being Found With No Pulse

After a night out with friends, Justin Smith of McAdoo, Pennsylvania, fell into the snow ? and wasn't discovered for another 12 hours. When his father found him the next morning, he was lifeless and had no pulse; it was 5 degrees below zero and snowing.

Smith lived to tell the story.

The 25-year-old was taken to the emergency room at Lehigh Valley Hospital on Feb. 21, 2015 ? the emergency personnel who arrived to the scene found no signs of life. The Washington Post reports Smith's body temperature was under 20 degrees Celsius, or 68 degrees Fahrenheit. For two hours, the hospital staff performed CPR on his frosty, seemingly lifeless body, and he was administered warm, oxygenated blood at another hospital.

Much to the health care team's surprise, Smith's heart began to beat on its own. He awoke two weeks later. And, much like the 1997 film "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery," Smith miraculously returned from his frozen state with no brain injury. He did, however, lose his toes and both pinky fingers to frostbite, according to the Washington Post.

"We may have witnessed a game-changer in modern medicine ? medicine moves forward in extraordinary cases," Gerald Coleman, the emergency department physician on duty at Lehigh Valley Hospital, told the Hazleton, Pennslyvania Standard-Speaker. "His survival is a paradigm change in how we resuscitate and how we treat people that suffer from hypothermia."
