Instagram just celebrated its fifth birthday a few days ago, and despite the site's popularity, there were no official announcement, no press releases, and no bells and whistles on its site to mark the occasion.

In spite of this, people still noticed it, probably as evidence of the service's huge presence in the daily life of over 400 million users.

Across time, Instagram kept true to its original style, and outside of small tweaks here and there, its famous mobile app stayed the course and looks generally the same as it did in 2009.

The app now has more filters than in the beginning, users can upload non-square photos, they can upload videos, they can create image collages (via the Layout app), they can create hyperlapsed videos (via the Hyperlapse app), they can DM each other, and they can search for photos based on location.

Some ads started showing up here and there, but they don't seem to bother users, for now.
