No fewer than 30 people have been killed in Anambra and Zamfara states, following a heavy downpour on Saturday that led to flooding.

According to reports, the rain also washed away over 400 houses and over 2,000 people have reportedly been rendered homeless.

According to eyewitnesses, some of the dead were trapped in their rooms, while sleeping, as the rain started late at night. Many of the victims are believed to be women and children.


In Zamfara, twenty four people reportedly died following the downpour that lasted for over seven hours. Property worth millions of naira were destroyed, including food items and domestic animals.

The areas mostly affected were Birnin Ruwa, Sabon Fegi, Filin Gunza and Tudun Wada and there was also flooding in Sabon Gari, Hayin Danhausa, Tudun Kosau and Hayin Malam Sani.

Meanwhile, in Anambra, six roadside traders were feared dead as they fell into a drain and were swept away by flood during the downpour.

Reports reveal that the incident occurred at about 7p.m on Saturday at the foot of Upper Iweka Flyover Bridge by Ezeiweka Road Junction, along Onitsha-Owerri Road, Onitsha, Anambra State.
