After removing the 140 character limit for its private messages, Twitter is now also adding support for desktop notifications.

These notifications will appear if the user is surfing Twitter.com and receives a direct message.

In case the user misses the change to the DM icon in the site's menu, a popup desktop-based notification will also be shown.

If this notification is clicked, the user will be taken to the DM center on Twitter.com.

By default, this notification is turned off for all users, and you'll have to go to your settings page to turn it on.

If you haven't ever seen a desktop notification triggered by a Web page, they are the homologue of push notifications on your mobile device.

The feature is slowly being rolled out for all users, so if you don't see it yet, go back to your settings panel after a few days.

Thanks to the removal of the 140 character limit, users can now send larger texts to each other, and since January, they can also mass-message each other as well.

These desktop notifications fit right in with Twitter's plan to (also) become a major player in the IM scene, allowing users to quickly get notified when someone sends them a message, a crucial factor in running an efficient and professional instant messaging service.
