WordPress Plugins hits over 1 Billion downloads
« on: August 11, 2015, 10:34:50 AM »
On August 10, 2015, the counter on the WordPress Plugins directory went over the 1,000,000,000 threshold.

There was no press release, no tweet, no Facebook post, and not even WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg mentioned it.

It's been a long way since 2003, when the CMS was launched as a tiny platform dedicated to bloggers only.

Since then, it branched out into a self-hosted open-source CMS and a Web-based free and commercial blogging platform (at, winning countless of awards along the way, and gathering a huge following in the developer community.

Currently, sites like Mojo Themes and Envato's marketplaces make a killing off WordPress themes and plugins, WordPress being the most lucrative CMS around, far surpassing Joomla, Drupal, Craft, ProcessWire, Ghost, and the rest.

Taking a look back in time using the Wayback Machine, we see the WordPress Plugins Directory had only 711 million downloads last year, 497 million in 2013, and 334 million in 2012.

Basically, the number of downloads has doubled in the last two years and has tripled from 3 years ago.

That's a statistic that comes to reinforce BuildWith's recent data, which has WordPress at 48% market share in the first six months of 2015, and anticipating it will go over 50% by the end of the year.
