At least 20 people were killed in northern Cameroon by two suicide bombers suspected to be members of Nigeria-based extremist group Boko Haram, officials and witnesses said on Wednesday.

The blasts went off in two different locations in Maroua, the capital of the Far North Region, a market place and a densely populated neighbourhood, according to regional governor Mijiyawa Bakary.

"There are several charred bodies...so many people have died in the blasts," resident Yeguie Salifa told dpa via telephone.

The attacks come a day after Boko Haram insurgents burnt at least six children and three adults during an attack on the village of Kamouna, also in the Far North Region.

At least eleven others were injured when gunmen torched more than 300 homes.

The previous week, two suicide bombers killed a dozen people in the nearby town of Fotokol.

Boko Haram, which seeks to establish a state governed by its very strict interpretation of Islamic law, has killed more than 14 000 people since 2009.

The group regularly infiltrates neighbouring Cameroon, Niger and Chad.
