No fewer than 33 people have died after consuming spurious liquor in Mumbai, India, a senior police official said on Friday.

Police spokesman, Dhananjay Kulkarni, said residents of slums in the Malvani areas fell ill after drinking the alcohol on Wednesday and first deaths were reported Thursday afternoon.

According to witnesses, many of those who drank the liquor started vomiting and complained of severe abdominal pain before collapsing.

?Nearly 50 people consumed spurious liquor at a slum in Malad on Wednesday night. They were all admitted to a hospital after they complained of vomiting and stomach pain.

?While 20 people died within hours 13 more succumbed on Thursday night,?? Kulkarni said, adding that 10 more people were in a critical condition at hospitals.

He added that police have so far arrested three persons in connection with the tragedy and started a manhunt to nab others involved.

?Police have detained three suspects in connection with the deaths and sent samples of the drink to be analyzed,?? Kulkarni said.

Meanwhile Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of the western Indian state of Maharashtra, the capital of which is Mumbai, has ordered a probe into the incident.

Report says that illegal liquor trade thrives in India mainly because it is cheaper than commercially produced alcohol.

In January 38 people died after consuming homemade liquor in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
