Four Nigerians who contested the British Parliamentary elections have won seats to represent their constituencies. They are: Chuka Harrison Umunna, of Igbo descent, a member of the British Labour Party who has been a member of Parliament (MP) since 2010; Helen Grant; Chi Onwurah and Kate Osamor. Grant, a lawyer, won her seat under the British Conservative Party. By her election, she becomes the first Conservatives female black MP. Onwurah and Osamor won their seats under the British Labour Party. Onwurah is Newcastle?s first black MP.

In what could be regarded as history made, 20- year-old Scottish student, Mhairi Black representing the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) became Britain?s youngest lawmaker since 1667, winning one of Labour party?s top figures in the process.
