Arsenal are said to be closing in on Atletico Madrid centre forward Mario Mandzukic, with the Gunners hoping to close a deal for the Croatian hitman this summer according to Metro.

The North London club looked at the distinguished striker during his Bayern Munich days, but the eastern Europe attacker opted for a move to the Estadio Vicente Calderon instead.

This season Mandzukic has been given the unenviable task of replacing Diego Costa in the Spanish capital and has scored 12 La Liga goals in a new-look Atletico attack.

However, with the 28-year-old lacking the pace to fit in with Diego Simeone?s fast, counter-attacking style, there are reports of a fall-out between manager and player behind the scenes.

The current Spanish champions have been linked with a move for Edinson Cavani to add pace to their attack, with the Uruguay international being touted as a replacement for Mandzukic.

Arsenal have their issues in attack as Olivier Giroud has shown contrasting form and was widely criticised for poor finishing in the side?s disappointing 3-1 defeat to Monaco in the Champions League recently.
