Windows 10 for Foldable Devices Leaked Online

While Microsoft has never confirmed that foldable devices are part of its long-term vision, it’s believed the company has been working on several projects, both in the software and hardware departments.

This week, for instance, BuildFeed has come across what’s very likely to be the very first Windows 10 build for foldable devices.

Obviously, no specifics are available, but judging from the build string, which is 10.0.18313.1004 (rs_shell_devices_foldables.190111-1800), this is a new Windows 10 version that is specifically developed for a new type of devices.

By the looks of things, this project is part of Windows 10 19H1 (version 1903), which is scheduled to launch in the spring.

Although no details have been provided, the first device that comes to mind and which could be powered by this new OS version is Microsoft’s very own Andromeda. Built as a dual-screen device supporting several form factors, Andromeda is one of Microsoft’s most ambitious, and at the same time, most highly-anticipated products.

Andromeda was originally pushed back to the drawing back last year, and people with knowledge of the matter said it might see daylight this year if it actually receives the green light.

At the same time, Microsoft is also working with a series of partners on foldable devices, all as part of a strategy that has been used before for the Surface lineup. Microsoft would thus launch its very own model pioneering a new product category, while partners would help expand it with devices in other price ranges, eventually making sure customers would be provided with a wide variety of choices.

It remains to be seen how this project evolves and, more importantly, if the foldable device push would be finalized by the time the next Windows 10 update goes live. For now, Microsoft remains tight-lipped on anything related to it, and this makes total sense because the company would thus be able to shelve the project should something go wrong.
