Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus is now the best-selling iPhone model in the United States, according to new data provided by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

This means the iPhone 8 Plus has managed to beat the iPhone X, which comes with a more significant overhaul, an OLED display, and Face ID facial recognition.

CIRP data shows that 2017 iPhone models, namely iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus account for just 54 percent of the iPhone sales that Apple recorded in the United States in the second quarter of 2018. This is a substantial drop from over 80 percent recorded by iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last year in the same quarter when they were the newest models on the market.

iPhone 8 Plus alone accounted for 24 percent of the iPhone sales, while iPhone X was the runner-up with 17 percent. iPhone 8 came third with 13 percent.

Older models selling strong
With 46 percent of the sales, older models, including here iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE, are still selling strong, and the data indicates that it may be due to the declining prices. This is one of the reasons iPhone X is no longer the best-selling model, as the anniversary model is one pricy purchase, with the cheapest configuration costing $999 in the United States.

“The latest iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X models accounted for a little more than half of sales, yet last year at this time the then-latest iPhone 7 and 7 Plus accounted for over 80%. And, the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, and SE grabbed 20% in the past quarter, virtually the same as in the June 2017 quarter, though at lower price points. So, it looks like two-year old legacy iPhones have squeezed the newer models. Still, because Apple increased base storage and boosted prices, we expect Average Selling Price to increase nicely over the June 2017 quarter,” Josh Lowitz, CIRP Partner and Co-Founder.

Apple is expected to unveil three new iPhone models in September, including an iPhone X successor with 5.8-inch OLED display, a Plus-sized 6.5-inch version, and a cheaper 6.1-inch iPhone with LCD screen.
