Manchester United set to sign Fred

Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign Fred with Manchester City no longer holding an interest in the Shakhtar Donestk midfielder.
The Brazil international was initially tipped to join Pep Guardiola's side during the winter transfer window but a deal failed to materialise with Shakhtar reluctant to sell.

City have since switched their attention to Napoli's Jorginho, and this sees United as the sole club interested in the enforcer, as per Manchester Evening News.

Fred has been watched by United scouts on numerous occasions during the current campaign and his passing range and defensive contribution have been the strong points in his performances.

Jose Mourinho's side have performed credibly against the top sides since the turn of the year but they are still in need of midfield depth ahead of next season with Michael Carrick due to retire from the game.

Marouane Fellaini's future also remains uncertain with his contract expiring in two months' time and Mourinho has recently hinted that the club may have to recruit two midfielders during the summer.
