Microsoft is working on three different iPhone models for the 2018 generation, and one of them is expected to be a 6.1-inch LCD configuration specifically developed to be more affordable.

Now KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has an excellent track on Apple scoops, says this particular iPhone is likely to cost just $550, as the Cupertino-based giant is looking to conquer markets like China where its super-premium models aren’t selling in high numbers. iPhone X is available from $999 in the US.

The new LCD iPhone could come in two different versions, with a single SIM or with dual-SIM support, with the latter to be the more expensive configuration.

Kuo says that while Apple could sell the single-SIM iPhone for $550 to $650, the dual-SIM model might be more expensive and cost $650 to $750.

The analyst believes the LCD iPhone would be very successful and Apple could sell between 100 million and 120 million units in the 12 months starting with Q3 2018 when this model is projected to hit the market.

No fingerprint sensor and dual-camera system
Additionally, Kuo believes dual-SIM support would also be brought to the bigger iPhone X, which could hit the market as iPhone X Plus and feature a 6.5-inch OLED panel. The standard 5.8-inch version of the new iPhone would only be offered with single-SIM support.

The more affordable 2018 iPhone might give up on Touch ID and adopt Face ID just like the iPhone X, despite the LCD screen. Additionally, it might lack more advanced features, like the dual-camera system and the glass body allowing for wireless charging, as means to keep the price as low as possible. A notch will almost certainly be offered for an edge-to-edge design approach.

As with everything Apple, these plans can change overnight, so a certain amount of skepticism is recommended. The revised iPhone generation is due in September.
