Apple Apologizes for Slowing Down Old iPhones

Apple published on Thursday a public letter to their customers apologizing for slowing down old iPhone devices with a feature implemented in the latest version of the iOS mobile operating system to prevent sudden shutdowns under certain conditions.

In the letter, Apple says that there's been a lot of misunderstanding from customers and the media about the fact that they throttle old iPhone models with damaged or almost depleted batteries, which could cause the device to shut down unexpectedly in cold weather and the battery charge was low, wanting to explain some things about this so-called feature.

"We’ve been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process. We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize," says Apple. "There’s been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we’re making."

The company explains in the letter how batteries degrade over time, which causes them to no longer hold a full charge. That's why some iPhone models in the past suddenly shut down in cold weather with 20% or lower charge. But Apple addressed said issue last year with an iOS software update, though it forgot to mention it publicly and inform customers that it throttles the performance.

Last year, they released the iOS 10.2.1 software update and implemented improved power management tweaks to peak workloads and prevent unexpected shutdowns on iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus models. After seeing reduced  occurrences of unexpected shutdowns, it extended it to iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices with the iOS 11.2 update.

Apple says they didn't do anything to shorten the life of their products
According to the company's statement, they didn't plan on intentionally shorten the life of any of their products or degrade the user experience in way that it will force customers to buy newer models. Apple also stated that the said feature was implemented to make old iPhone models last longer, even if some people see it otherwise and sued the company in the United States, Israel, and France.

To address the concerns of their customers, as well as to recognize their loyalty for buying and using their products and to regain the trust of those who may have doubted their intentions, Apple has reduced the price of out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacements from $79 to $29 USD for iPhone 6 or later devices that need a replacement battery.

The new battery replacement program will start in late January 2018 and will be available worldwide until December 2018. In addition, Apple will release a new iOS software update in early 2018 for all supported iPhone models, which will come with new battery management features to allow customers to view in-depth details about the health of their iPhone’s batteries, finally!
